DOWNTOWN HALIFAX

CITADEL HILL | WATERFRONT

Halifax, a city steeped in maritime history, offers a treasure trove of scenic drives, and our "Sunday Drives" series is here to guide you through them.

Our first stop? The majestic Citadel Hill, a landmark that's not only a visual feast but also a window into the city's rich past.

A Drive Through Time

Begin your journey by ascending Citadel Hill, a drive that offers stunning views of Halifax's dynamic cityscape and its expansive harbor. Whether you choose to loop around the Citadel's perimeter for a 360-degree panorama or park and embark on a leisurely walk to the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas. The sight of sailboats dotting the harbor against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean is particularly captivating, especially as the sun dips below the horizon.

The Citadel's Storied Past

Citadel Hill isn't merely a scenic vantage point; it's a designated National Historic Site that has witnessed centuries of Halifax's evolution. Since its inception in 1749, four distinct fortifications have graced this hill, each playing a vital role in safeguarding the city.

Fort George: A Victorian-Era Masterpiece

The current star-shaped fortress, known as Fort George, is the fourth and final iteration of the Citadel. Completed in 1856, this imposing structure, with its imposing walls and silent cannons, stands as a testament to British military engineering and strategic significance. Though it never faced a direct attack, Fort George's presence was enough to deter potential foes.

Living History at the Citadel

What sets Citadel Hill apart is its commitment to bringing history to life. Daily, the 78th Highlanders and Royal Artillery, clad in authentic 1800s uniforms, transport visitors back in time with their drills, demonstrations, and musical performances. It's an immersive experience that makes history tangible and engaging for all ages.
